Well, I seemingly recovered from the week of house guests but there has been another lasting effect. Namely: a leaky bathroom. Now this was not caused by houseguests, but was certainly triggered by them.
Unbeknownst to us the dork who remodeled this house wasnt always paying attention to what he was doing and nailed right through the drywall in the bathroom directly into a copper pipe. Seeing as this was in our spare bathroom that we rarely use, it was never really exacerbated before the guests were using it for a week straight. And even then the leak must have been slow.
We didnt notice anything until Evan came home from golfing yesterday and asked me why there was shredded paper on the floor. I just assumed the cats got a hold of a paper towel and had done their usually shredding of it. Evan then realized it was not paper or paper towel and looked up to see the sopping ceiling.
The location (in our living room ceiling) immediately indicated a leak in the upstairs bathroom, but everything in the bathroom seemed in order. Then we went into the knee-wall crawlspace attic and that was where the water was. Not a lot, very localized but still the source of the leak eluded us.
A few confused searched and a few helpful neighbors later and the nail puncturing the back of the pipe was found. So, Evan pulled it out. Yep. Apparently he never took first aid and learned that you shouldnt take the object out of a puncture wound. We plastered some Magic Putty on it and looked for the water shut off which we couldnt find and then we crossed our fingers and went to bed. Unfortunately the magic putty does not hold up to its claims and the leak was not stopped.
Now we are waiting for another neighbor of ours to get home. He apparently is a plumber and we may be able to talk him into fixing this in exchange for a case of beer.
Keep your fingers crossed.
