The best defense is a good offence

So if the best defense is a good offence, is there a point where that offence is cause for concern.

Say there is someone who criticizes, berates and belittles you so much that you build your defenses, create your offence, but then that offence becomes and instigation for more conflict, are you then causing the problem even though all you’re trying to do is have a good defense?
